Developmental Editing

To help you …

  • improve the structure and flow of argumentation and narrative in your book, monograph, book proposal, or journal article.
  • shape the ‘big picture’ of a manuscript: the concept, content, thesis, main arguments, narrative or exposition, and style;
  • develop a blueprint for the revised manuscript;
  • improve weak argumentation, and ensure a central thesis runs through the entire manuscript;
  • sharpen focus and clarity of themes, topics, and thesis statements;
  • tackle issues such as the pacing of the research story, the style and tone of your authorial voice, and the creation of effective transitions from chapter to chapter, section to section, and paragraph to paragraph.

I have found that there is no set pattern in a developmental edit. It always begins with a free Zoom/phone consultation to learn about your situation and consider ways forward. If you’re still in the planning stages, we can go over some initial ideas, and then I can assess your outline and offer alternatives. However it is more often the case that you’re calling me after you’ve written a first draft that you or a publisher sensed requires significant revision. In almost every case, I encourage authors to request a manuscript assessment. I will read through the entire manuscript (or chapter(s)) closely, taking notes, and then write you a detailed evaluation of its strengths and weaknesses. I’ll also provide you with a detailed revision plan with suggested changes section-by-section and chapter-by-chapter. (And if you want, I can also get involved in the hands-on and line edit the manuscript for you.)
